Flash Flood in Bhote Koshi River of Nepal on 26 August 2026

Severe flash floods struck the Bhote Koshi River area of Nepal on 26 August 2026, resulting in huge loss of lives, widespread displacement and extensive damage to houses, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure.
Nepal’s security and disaster-management agencies, local authorities and health services have been fully mobilised for search and rescue, evacuation, emergency medical assistance and relief operations. The river systems and downstream flood risks are being continuously monitored. The Government of Nepal is utilising all resources at its disposal for the search, rescue and relief efforts for all those affected.
So far, 359 bodies have been recovered from the river areas, while many people, both locals and tourists, are still missing. According to the latest available information, 596 people from 33 countries are still missing (list is attached). These figures remain subject to verification as search and rescue operations continue.
At this stage, our immediate and utmost priority is to save lives and support search and rescue, evacuation and relief efforts in the affected areas. Contributions for these efforts can be made through the link: https://pmdrf.nchl.com.np/.
In view of the extensive damage caused by the floods to critical infrastructure, the Government will continue to assess the situation and emerging needs on the ground and, where necessary, communicate specific requirements for assistance through established official channels.
